HSBC Main Building, Hong Kong

Location: Central, Hong Kong

Model Height: Approximately 68 bricks

Construction period: 8 days (excluding research time)

Scale 1: 265

The iconic design, all the details and features make HSBC Main Building the symbol of Hong Kong and a milestone in modern architecture. I have always wanted to create this famous building in LEGO form so I went for it immediately when the project started.

HSBC Main Building had the most complex design among all of my models so I started out digging whatever reference that I could find. I ended up with lots of design drawings, papers, and photos of the building scattered over my building area and pasted onto my walls (Nonetheless, the building was still not 100% accurate). They were all very useful and the design drawings allowed the finished model to be built beautifully right to scale.

In honour of the actual building, I tried to squeeze in as much defining details, from the facade supports and mirror to the lobby escalators and lions statutes, as possible. Windows were built in three layers to imitate the reflection of sunlight and cloud, as well as sunshades.

Fun fact: The actual building took approximately 8 years to complete, mine took 8 days ;-)

HSBC Main Building is now on LEGO Ideas, please support this project if you want to bring it home ;-)
