Hong Kong landmarks at Toys'R'us flagship

What is this project about?

During April and May 2014, I designed and built 4 LEGO scale models of iconic buildings on Hong Kong Island for LEGO Hong Kong Ltd. The models joined the creations by fellow Hong Kong creators to form a display of the renowned Victoria Harbour skyline at Toys'R'us flagship, Tsimshatsui, Hong Kong.

Planning

The project kick-started in late Feb 2014, with team members determining which iconic buildings were to be built. Various building scales were discussed and the "biggest land auction" in the history of Hong Kong ended with me taking HSBC Main Building, Standard Chartered Bank Building, Central Plaza, Citic Tower, Former Bank of China Headquarters and Mandarin Oriental Hong Kong. The last 2 buildings didn't make the final cut though.

Building

My models were built on a 1: 265 scale (Central Plaza's antenna was cut short due to height restriction of the toy shop). This is the second time I built something in this scale (the last time was a scale model of 1881 hotel and shopping mall which form part of the entire Tsim Sha Tsui district, Hong Kong for "Tsimshatsui, past, present and future") and I am loving it!

All of the buildings had really unique shapes and I had a lot of fun making them. I started testing various building techniques and making prototypes in early March and the real fun began in late April when my parts finally arrived. The most challenging buildings were HSBC and Standard Chartered, and they were also my personal favourites (check out their respective descriptions to find out more). I didn’t count the number of pieces used but the finished models were all really heavy!
